MOLIT plans to nurture Korean-made geospatial information software players

- Testbed operation results presentation session set to be held at the National Assembly on February 4, 2014 -

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea (Minister: H.E. Mr. Suh Seoung-hwang) announced that it will hold a presentation session on the operation results of the testbed on geospatial information software at the National Assembly on February 4, 2014.

- Approximately 100 enterprise heads, and relevant ranking officials to the geospatial software industry will convene to hear the presentations, as it will also serve as an avenue for gathering opinions and voices for setting future directions of the Korean geospatial information software industry and how to nurture it more actively in the future.

MOLIT has created a testbed set up to find ways to nurture Korean geospatial information software companies and operated it between August and December of 2013, which was offered to all participating companies free of charge.

- Based on the feedback of those interested companies that took part in the testbed project, MOLIT also was able to establish criteria for evaluations that verify the exact status of Korea's geospatial information industry's technical level.

This time, the testbed mainly saw if purely Korean-made technology could replace the existing imported foreign-made software systems, and in the end, a total of four Korean companies were able to receive passing grades.

Meanwhile, MOLIT plans to establish a quality testing authority for geospatial information software within the first half of 2014, and the results of the testbed operation that will be released at the National Assembly presentation session will be fully utilized as valuable backup resources used to determine specific quality certification criteria.

In addition, a software development project that will be the standardized model for the current Korea Land Information System will also be started in the first half of this year.

The aim is to replace the operating environment of the Korea Land Information Systems to be entirely Korean-technology-based on a step-by-step basis and in doing so, MOLIT vows to provide a level playing field so as to encourage scores of SMEs to participate as well as long as they are armed with competitive technology and know-how.

An official related to MOLIT commented that MOLIT plans to continue its works in promoting Korea's geospatial information industry abroad, while maintain its efforts of further nurturing promising Korean enterprises as they make inroads into markets overseas.
